Our Story - A Snapshot History of Weston Bible Week

A marquee in Clarence Park, Weston-super-Mare in the summer of 1946 was the venue for the Southern Counties Convention for visiting holiday makers and local people alike.  Those who went remember large crowds and enthusiastic singing.

The Keswick Convention meeting pattern was followed with a Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon session, and on weekdays, an early prayer meeting, Bible reading and other sessions with an evening meeting - all with different visiting speakers each evening.  There was a local contact to arrange accommodation for visitors to Weston.

Detailed records from 1954 show that speakers included Alan Stibbs, Eric Alexander, Paul Tucker, J.I. Packer and Kenneth Prior amongst many other well known names.

The Chairman and driving force for many years was Rev Alex Motyer from Clifton College, Bristol and the Trustees were drawn from across the country.

A number of Missionary Speakers together with two local men, Rev Martin Parsons from Locking and Rev Keith Weston from Christ Church Weston-super-Mare joined the impressive list of speakers.

The Technical College in Knightstone Road became the venue from 1973 and then from 1977, Waterloo Hall in the Boulevard and Bristol Road Baptist Church hosted the meetings.

In the 80’s Young Peoples Meetings and Women’s Rallies were annual events and a move to fewer speakers but they included Dr George Carey, later Archbishop of Canterbury and Gilbert Kirby, President of the Evangelical Alliance.

The event took on a new name in 1991, ‘Weston Bible Week’ and in 1992 Alex Motyer handed over the Chair to Rev David Godfrey of Bristol Road Baptist Church.

In 1998 Bible Week Plus started in January bringing fresh speakers. In 2002 on his retirement, David Godfrey handed over to Pastor Marc Owen of Milton Baptist Church.  Rev John Smith was the Evening Speaker in 2003 and when he subsequently moved to the area, he joined the Council.

In 2004 the PLUS was moved to March and the Bible Week to September.  Marc Owen moved from the area in 2005 and in 2006 Rev Keith Hallett became the Chairman.

The Council decided to make the PLUS more radical but serving the Churches and reduced the number of Bible Week evenings in September to three.

Weston Bible Week and Bible Week Plus continue to go from strength to strength, equipping and teaching believers of all ages from the truth of the living word - The Bible.
